IVING ON TRAIN TRACKS
L
Calcutta is one of the largest and poorest cities in India and has more than 15 million inhabitants registered (20+ million unregistered). Many people from the region go to Calcutta in search of work. Due to the scarcity of space, people are forced to occupy every piece of land. Large neighborhoods have been created right next to the railway where entire families live in home-made houses. Community life takes place on the track, where children play, mothers cook, the market is held and where every 10-20 minutes a train rushes through that pauses life for a brief moment.
